Uwe Boll, the maverick German director, is back with a reboot of the iconic horror-action franchise, Alone in the Dark. This exclusive announcement comes as Boll's Event Films secures the film rights to the beloved survival horror video game series from THQ Nordic. The franchise, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, follows private detective Edward Carnby in his battle against the undead and has already sold millions of units worldwide. With seven games under its belt, the series is a cult classic.
Boll's previous adaptation of Alone in the Dark in 2005, starring Christian Slater and Tara Reid, received mixed reviews but has since gained a cult following. For the reboot, Boll aims to stay true to the original game, focusing on the story of the latest 2024 release. He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'We will capture the spirit and era of the original games and follow the story of the new game. We can't wait to reboot the franchise and cast our new Edward Carnby.'
Boll's production partner, Michael Roesch, adds that they are also exploring the possibility of developing the franchise into a TV series. Boll's history with video game adaptations is well-known, especially his indie game versions, which often took creative liberties with the source material. Notable examples include House of the Dead, Bloodrayne, Far Cry, and In the Name of the King. His unique approach to these adaptations has made him a controversial figure among some video game fans.
Boll's boldness extends beyond the screen. He famously challenged his online critics to a boxing match, showcasing his willingness to engage in physical confrontation. The director is also working on Return to Zombie Island, a sequel to House of the Dead, and two back-to-back sequels of his 2024 cop thriller, First Shift, which was a surprise hit on Paramount+. Additionally, he has recently wrapped up his action thriller, Citizen Vigilante, starring Armie Hammer. The success of video game adaptations like The Minecraft Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog films, as well as the announcement of a new Far Cry TV series, further solidifies the market's renewed interest in this genre.
