"Where does the money come from for them?" McCallum asks, referring to the additional burden on local sports teams and healthcare appointments.

Local SDLP councillor Joe Boyle, chairperson of the Strangford Lough Ferry Service Working Group, shares his disappointment over the proposed price increases. He highlights the strain on households already grappling with rising costs across the board, from fuel to heating oil and food.
"Locals will now face an increased fare with no insight as to how long it will be in place before yet another increase is imposed," Boyle says, emphasizing the uncertainty and financial burden.

Boyle also expresses frustration over the context of the fare increases since 2024. While acknowledging that the current increase is small, he points out that fares have risen by 40% in the last 12 to 15 months, a significant jump across the board for ferry services.
The standard single passenger fare between Strangford and Portaferry increased from £1 to £1.30 in 2024, and a standard single car fare rose from £5.80 to £7.70.
