Ricky Gervais, the mastermind behind the iconic sitcom The Office, has revealed a concerning detail about a classic scene that left his castmates and crew genuinely worried. The dance scene, a beloved moment in the show's history, almost cost Gervais his health. In a recent YouTube special marking the show's 25th anniversary, Gervais opened up about the intense physical exertion required to pull off the dance, which he described as 'probably the most famous single thing I’ve ever done'.
The actor, who co-created the series with Stephen Merchant, shared that he was 'the blobbiest I’ve ever been' at the time, weighing around 14 stone with no muscles. The energy and effort put into the dance scene were so great that Gervais had to be fanned and rested afterwards, with those around him genuinely concerned about his breathing. He humorously compared himself to Tom Cruise, known for his daring stunts, but admitted that he would never attempt such a dance now, as it would likely be fatal.
Gervais explained that while the scene was improvised, he had a general idea of what he wanted to do when filming began. He appreciated the authenticity of the dance, which included a crab move that he couldn't even attempt today. The scene was shot in three takes, with different reactions from the cast: one where the colleagues laughed, another where Brent himself laughed, and the final one where those around him looked bewildered. The final cut was then edited to make it appear as if it was all captured in one take.
This revelation comes as a surprise to some, as Martin Freeman, who played Tim Canterbury, recently argued that the show was not fully improvised. Freeman and Mackenzie Crook, who played Gareth, were involved in a BBC Two special where they discussed the show's creative process. Freeman noted that the published scripts were transcriptions of the actual performances, which was a source of annoyance at the time. However, he understood the need for some level of protection to maintain the show's integrity and prevent people from mistaking it for a completely ad-libbed performance.
