During his address at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, Carney remarked that while Canada prides itself on its values of diversity and inclusion, it has not always fulfilled the ideals it professes. He took a moment to acknowledge the grim reality of slavery, which was practiced in the early colonies that would eventually form Canada. Even after the abolition of slavery, he noted, segregation continued to plague society.
Carney pointed out that, even today, significant disparities remain, particularly in the representation of Black entrepreneurs within the Canadian business landscape. He emphasized that the government of Ottawa is dedicated to empowering Black Canadians and concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to the attendees for allowing him to be part of this important mission.
Earlier in the event, Jean Augustine, who made history as Canada's first Black female Member of Parliament and played a pivotal role in introducing legislation that designated February as Black History Month, urged the audience to "carry forward the legacy of inclusion and justice."
