Panthers' Isaah Yeo: We're Fighting for Another NRL Title | 2025 Season Preview (2026)

A direct challenge has thrust 16 clubs into a state of alarm.

This season, the NRL is on high alert as Penrith Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo expresses unwavering confidence in his team’s pursuit of another championship. He believes the Panthers initially stumbled at the start of the 2025 season, yet they came remarkably close to reaching a sixth consecutive grand final.

In an intense preliminary final, the Panthers faced the eventual champions, the Broncos, who pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat the four-time titleholders, who had finally exhausted their reserves of energy. This modern-era powerhouse had to exert more effort than usual during the latter half of the regular season after finding themselves at the bottom of the ladder following 12 rounds, managing only three victories.

The team's usually strong defense let them down in those early months. However, a disheartening loss against Newcastle in Bathurst served as a crucial wake-up call, prompting them to reclaim their form and instill apprehension in the rest of the league.

Even as summer winds down, that fierce determination remains alive, with Yeo sending a clear message to the other 16 clubs that might have assumed the Panthers' reign was over. "I’m feeling very optimistic about this year, just as I have been for the past five or six years," declared the Kangaroos captain during a conversation on SEN radio.

He elaborated, "I truly believe we are in a position where we should be aiming to contend for the title once more. Last season was disappointing because we significantly underperformed in the first half. It’s tough to recover when you find yourself at the bottom halfway through the season.

"However, I take immense pride in our ability to rise from such adversity. Few teams could have bounced back like we did, coming within 40 minutes of a grand final if not for the Broncos and their comeback prowess. It's bittersweet to reflect on our performance; there's a lot of regret from that first half where we had to confront some hard truths about ourselves, especially after that Bathurst match, which marked a pivotal moment for our season.

"I’d like to think we can carry the confidence we built in those last three or four months into the upcoming season."

The Panthers are gearing up for a mini training camp ahead of the pre-season trials, where they will go head-to-head with the Cowboys and the Wests Tigers later this month. This marks the first time in several years that they haven't experienced a mass exodus of star players, although they have lost some important depth pieces like Daine Laurie and Brad Schneider.

While they haven’t recruited any marquee players, they have signed several members from the successful Warriors team that clinched both the NSW Cup final and the State Championship decider. Tom Ale, Kalani Going, and Freddy Lussick are all making the move to Sydney after previously playing alongside Jett Cleary—Nathan's younger brother—at the Warriors.

Yeo expressed enthusiasm about these new additions, stating, "They've been performing exceptionally well. Even before Christmas, we were hearing great things about how well they were doing.

"We've seen a lot of turnover in recent years. Looking back, I believe it has been beneficial for the players who left, allowing them to gain new experiences in different systems and refresh their careers.

"For us, it brings a new source of motivation, especially from the Kiwi players who have joined us, as they seek to impress our group. Freddy Lussick has undoubtedly been the standout performer in pre-season training so far. He has excelled in every fitness test and has shown tremendous dedication. We've heard about his training excellence from others, and he has certainly proven to be a top performer among the team."

But here's where it gets interesting: Will the Panthers be able to maintain their momentum and prove they are still a dominant force in the league? What do you think? Are they set for another title run, or is their time coming to an end? Share your thoughts in the comments!
