A family-owned business was on the brink of collapse after their trusted accounts manager, Susanne Redhead, stole a staggering £767,000 and gambled it away. This betrayal of trust not only put the company at risk but also jeopardized the jobs of her colleagues and friends. Redhead, who had worked for the Newcastle-based Pure Panel Management since 2010, had risen to the position of accounts manager with no one above her in the department. Her criminal activities came to light in January 2025, when it was discovered that she had been making regular payments to herself, including £100,000 in the previous seven days and £363,000 in December 2024 alone. When confronted, Redhead admitted to her gambling addiction, stating, 'I knew this was coming. I've been gambling.' An investigation revealed that between November 2023 and January 2025, she had stolen £767,272 in 445 separate transactions. This was not the first time Redhead had stolen from her employer, as she had also taken £18 from the team the previous evening to fund her gambling habit. The company's managing director, James Gillam, expressed his shock and anger, saying, 'She put the company on the brink of collapse and could have ruined many families' lives.' He also mentioned that the company had recently paid for an expensive outing for staff to watch Newcastle United play in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, including drinks and other expenses. Helen Scorer, the operations director, branded Redhead's actions 'utterly disgusting' and said she had jeopardized jobs. Redhead, 53, of Wroxham Court, Newbiggin Hall, Newcastle, with no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to theft and was jailed for three years. Judge Tim Gittins said, 'You have devastated colleagues who treated you as a close friend and trusted you implicitly, and you have shattered their confidence and put the company at the risk of collapse.' Redhead's gambling addiction led her to take more money than she could afford, and she has not lived a lavish lifestyle as a result. She is now subject to Proceeds of Crime Act proceedings to try to claw back any assets she may have. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of trust in the workplace and the devastating consequences of betrayal.
