A storm of controversy has erupted in the Miss Universe world! Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch, found herself at the center of a heated exchange that led to a dramatic walkout during a pre-competition event in Bangkok. But what exactly happened, and why did it cause such a stir? Let's dive in.
On November 3rd, before the sash ceremony, a top Miss Universe official, Nawat Itsaragrisil, the president of Miss Universe for Asia and Oceania, reportedly confronted Bosch. He questioned her about missing a sponsor photoshoot, and the situation quickly escalated. Several contestants, in a show of solidarity, stood up and walked out. The whole scene was captured on video and is now circulating across social media.
Itsaragrisil's words, as seen in the video, were firm: "Anyone who wants to continue in the competition, sit down." He even allegedly called for security to remove Bosch. In response, Bosch stated, "We are empowered women, and this platform is meant to give us a voice — no one can silence us." She claimed Itsaragrisil called her "stupid," citing his issues with the Miss Universe organization. She emphasized her respect for Thailand and encouraged women not to tolerate degrading treatment.
But here's where it gets controversial... The incident seems to be rooted in tensions between Itsaragrisil and the current Miss Universe Organization (MUO) leadership, headed by Mexican businessman Raúl Rocha and Guatemalan businessman Mario Búcaro. Itsaragrisil's firm recently acquired shares from former Miss Universe director Anne Jakrajutatip. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
The MUO responded by stating their commitment to protecting the dignity, safety, and respect of every delegate. They also announced that Búcaro would travel to Thailand to strengthen collaboration with the host country. They reaffirmed that the pageant events would continue as planned, working closely with Itsaragrisil's group.
Miss Universe Mexico took to social media to thank her supporters and reiterate the importance of respect. She wrote, "From Mexico to the world we remind you of something: Respect is not optional. Empowerment is not a trend. It is our right."
And this is the part most people miss... Itsaragrisil issued a public apology on November 4th, saying, "If someone felt uncomfortable, if someone was affected, I apologize to each of those people."
The Miss Universe final is scheduled for November 20th at 7 p.m. and will air live on Telemundo and the Peacock streaming service.
