The power of unexpected kindness: a life-changing encounter with a stranger
In the 1980s, I embarked on a European backpacking adventure with a friend. Little did I know, a chance encounter in New York City would alter the course of my life forever.
We found ourselves at International House, a Rockefeller-funded residence for postgraduate students on the Upper West Side. After settling in, we headed to the canteen, where I struck up a conversation with an Iraqi engineering student from Columbia University.
He inquired about my background, and I shared my recent science degree and research experience with an electron microscope at CSIRO. Unbeknownst to me, this conversation would lead to an opportunity that changed everything.
"There's an electron microscope unit at Columbia, right next to the engineering department," he said. "You should apply for a job there."
I laughed it off, thinking it was an impossible dream. I was about to fly to Europe, and more importantly, I didn't have a US visa.
But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, unexpected. The next day, the Iraqi student approached me again. He had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit. Despite my initial skepticism, I went to the interview, only to be met with an offer and the promise of making my visa happen.
In a city where dreams seemingly come true, I found myself accepting a job at Columbia University. And the perks didn't stop there. I also received free tuition, allowing me to pursue a master's in international affairs.
I never saw that student again, but his act of kindness had a ripple effect on my life. It gave me the courage to pursue opportunities I never thought possible. It allowed me to study abroad and meet my future husband in Zurich, leading to a beautiful family of four.
And this is the part most people miss: the impact of a single act of kindness can be life-altering. It can change the trajectory of your entire life, opening doors you never knew existed.
