In a city known for its architectural marvels, Stockholm's latest addition, Slussporten, challenges conventional wisdom and offers a unique dining experience. This glass-fronted restaurant, designed by Swedish studio Wingårdhs, is a bold statement beneath the iconic Goldbridge, or Slussbron, designed by Foster + Partners.
A Transparent Challenge
Slussporten's concept is a refreshing take on the notion that "nothing good happens under a bridge." Architects Gert Wingårdh and Maria Normann envisioned a space that defies this stereotype, creating a transparent, light-filled haven beneath the bridge's imposing structure.
"The bridge dominates, and we wanted to embrace that," they explained. Their design, a self-supporting glass structure, is a delicate contrast to the bridge's solidity, a theme they describe as "solidity and fragility."

The use of "super-transparent glass" is a key element. It not only maximizes natural light but also invites a sense of openness and security, challenging the typical association of bridge underpasses with darkness and uncertainty.
"We wanted to create a place where people feel comfortable and welcome, a space that invites them to linger and enjoy the unique atmosphere," the architects added.
Connecting with the Bridge
While Slussporten is structurally independent from Slussbron, the connection is subtle yet powerful. Dark sheet metal at the bridge foundations visually links the two, creating a sense of unity.
"The foundations govern, and we wanted to respect that," Normann explained. "By stepping back and letting the foundations read clearly, we ensure the bridge's dominance while still creating our own distinct space."

Inside, Slussporten is divided into three sections, each with its own character. Interior architects Helena Toresson and Sara Helder aimed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, using a variety of materials to achieve this.
The main bar, with its beaten-metal design, reflects the water outside, while the interior walls are adorned with Italian glass mosaic, inspired by the graffiti often found under bridges. This unique blend of materials and textures creates a space that is both inviting and visually intriguing.
