But here’s where it gets even more inspiring: his path from rural KwaZulu-Natal to the forefront of particle physics wasn’t just about personal ambition—it’s a story of sharing knowledge, uplifting communities, and redefining what’s possible for the next generation.
Born and raised in the quiet village of Ntendeka in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal, Nkosinathi’s early life was shaped by the ingenuity of his grandfather, who engineered solutions like creating a water system from a communal tap. This spirit of innovation, combined with the vast night skies of Ulundi, sparked his fascination with the cosmos. And this is the part most people miss: it was his high school teacher’s passion for physical science and the limited access to resources that fueled his determination to explore beyond the curriculum. Armed with science magazines and a thirst for knowledge, he began to dream big.
Fast forward to 2022, and Sangweni graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) with a first-class BSc in physics and astrophysics, followed by an honours degree in physics in 2023. Currently pursuing an MSc in physics at UCT, his academic achievements are nothing short of remarkable. But what sets him apart is his commitment to giving back. As a tutor in high school, he realized that sharing knowledge could transform how others perceive science. Here’s the controversial part: he believes formal education often misses the mark by making science seem rigid and unfun, while informal, casual learning can ignite curiosity and passion.
One of his most notable achievements was his selection for the CERN programme in Geneva, where he spent June to August 2024 working alongside global scientists. There, he developed an AI-powered computer program to classify muons, a type of particle. This work is part of the ATLAS Experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, which probes the fundamental building blocks of matter. But here’s the thought-provoking question: as we push the boundaries of particle physics, are we truly prepared for the ethical and philosophical questions these discoveries might raise?
Sangweni’s journey is also deeply rooted in community. Raised primarily by his grandparents, he understands the challenges of limited access to quality education. This has shaped his vision for the future: he aims to make education more accessible, regardless of background, and inspire the next generation of scientists from underserved communities. Looking ahead, Sangweni aspires to pursue a DPhil in particle physics at Oxford University, focusing on astroparticle physics. He dreams of exploring lower energies to extrapolate new physics beyond our current technological reach. Beyond academia, he continues to tutor, volunteer, and serve as a lab demonstrator, embodying the belief that knowledge is meant to be shared.
