The European Union is gearing up to launch an antitrust investigation into Meta Platforms, specifically focusing on the integration of artificial intelligence within its popular messaging app, WhatsApp. This news, reported by the Financial Times, highlights the growing concerns surrounding how tech giants are leveraging generative AI on their massive platforms.
The core of the issue? The EU is scrutinizing Meta's rollout of its Meta AI features within WhatsApp. This AI system, which includes a chatbot and virtual assistant, has been available in the European markets since March 2025.
But here's where it gets controversial... The investigation is expected to examine whether Meta is abusing its market dominance by integrating its own AI tools into WhatsApp. The EU is also looking into whether Meta is unfairly blocking rival AI chatbots from accessing the messaging platform. This follows an earlier investigation by Italy's antitrust watchdog, which opened a probe in July focusing on similar allegations.
Meta has stated it hasn't received details of the probe, referring to an earlier statement about the Italian inquiry, which it deemed 'unfounded.'
The European Commission is expected to announce the investigation soon, though the exact timing remains uncertain. Interestingly, the probe will be conducted under traditional antitrust rules, not the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which is usually used to scrutinize Big Tech companies.
