But here’s where it gets groundbreaking: After a transformative two-year collaboration with the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), CCTH has officially become the Central Region’s first and only hospital to offer laparoscopic services. And this is just the beginning.
Laparoscopy, often called ‘minimally invasive surgery,’ is a game-changer in the medical world. Instead of large, open incisions, surgeons use small cuts and slender instruments equipped with cameras to perform procedures inside the body. The result? Less pain, shorter hospital stays, and fewer complications for patients. The KOFIH-CCTH project wasn’t just about introducing laparoscopy—it was about building a sustainable ecosystem. Through this initiative, CCTH trained 31 staff members, including surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and biomedical engineers, in laparoscopic techniques. So far, 15 patients have successfully undergone these procedures, and the hospital has invested in simulation machines to ensure continuous training. Dr. Eric Kofi Ngyedu, CEO of CCTH, celebrated this milestone as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to advancing surgical care. He emphasized that the project achieved its goals of creating a state-of-the-art training center, enhancing staff skills, and ensuring high-quality laparoscopic services. Looking ahead, CCTH plans to expand its capabilities by acquiring advanced anesthesia machines and other surgical tools, solidifying its position as a center of excellence in Ghana.
Dr. Bomin Yang, Country Director of KOFIH, highlighted the project’s focus on patient safety and faster recovery times through minimally invasive techniques. He also revealed that KOFIH is collaborating with other Ghanaian institutions on projects in maternal and child health, biomedical engineering, and emergency services—a holistic approach to strengthening the nation’s healthcare system.
However, challenges remain. Mr. Kafui Akpedonu, Project Coordinator at CCTH, praised the project’s success but pointed out the financial strain of maintaining consumables and the shortage of anesthesia machines. Despite these obstacles, he expressed optimism about expanding the center’s reach to serve more regions and partner with other institutions.
Mr. Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, the Central Regional Minister, hailed the introduction of laparoscopic services as a ‘quantum leap’ for Ghanaian healthcare. He urged CCTH to raise awareness about this procedure among local communities and healthcare providers, predicting it would drive demand.
