Imagine being thousands of miles from home, soaring over remote landscapes, when suddenly, a red light flashes, and the pilot announces an unexpected detour. That's precisely what happened to passengers aboard an Air India flight, and the destination might surprise you!
An Air India Boeing 777, registration VT-AEH, operating as flight AI174 from San Francisco (SFO) to Delhi, experienced a mid-air hiccup. But instead of landing at a major hub, the pilots made a precautionary landing in Ulaanbaatar (ULN), Mongolia. Yes, Mongolia! The aircraft, belonging to the Tata Group-owned Indian FSC Air India, was carrying 228 passengers and 17 crew members. Thankfully, everyone landed safely.
Air India has confirmed they are working on alternate travel arrangements to get everyone to Delhi while the aircraft undergoes thorough technical inspections.
The flight had departed San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:25 pm local time, with Kolkata as an intermediate stop before heading to Delhi.
Midway through the long journey, the flight crew detected what they believed to be a potential technical problem. In line with standard safety protocols, they chose to divert to Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia. This decision was purely precautionary, emphasizing passenger safety above all else.
Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, passengers received meals onboard before disembarking. Immigration procedures were completed at Ulaanbaatar International Airport, and Air India arranged hotel accommodations for everyone while sorting out alternative transportation to Delhi.
A spokesperson for the airline stated that the Boeing 777-200LR, which is over 16 years old, is currently undergoing a comprehensive inspection. Air India emphasized that passenger safety remains their absolute top priority and apologized for any inconvenience caused by the unforeseen diversion.

"AI174 of 02 November, operating from San Francisco to Delhi via Kolkata, made a precautionary landing at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, after the flight crew suspected a technical issue en route. The aircraft landed safely at Ulaanbaatar and is undergoing the necessary checks. We are working closely with our partners to support all passengers while we make efforts to get everyone on their way to the destination at the earliest opportunity. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers due to the unforeseen situation. At Air India, the safety of passengers and crew remain top priority.”
So, what happens next?
Air India is dispatching a replacement aircraft, along with a team of engineers and the necessary equipment, to Ulaanbaatar. This is standard procedure for unscheduled diversions. The plan is for the new aircraft to transport the passengers and crew to Delhi. Meanwhile, the engineering team will repair the original aircraft and fly it back once it's been given the all-clear.

In a further update, an Air India Spokesperson added:
"With the help of our partner and local authorities, Air India has extended immediate assistance to the passengers. They were served meals on board and have been disembarked. Hotel arrangements have been made for their stay after clearing immigration procedures at the airport while Air India makes alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination Delhi at the earliest. Air India sincerely regret the inconvenience to passengers arising from this unforeseen diversion, which was undertaken in the interest of safety. Every effort is being made to minimise the inconvenience.”
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the first time Air India has experienced technical issues on its long-haul flights from San Francisco.
In June 2023, a San Francisco–Delhi (SFO–DEL) flight had to divert to Magadan, Russia (GDX), leaving passengers stranded for nearly 39 hours before a replacement aircraft arrived. As compensation, the airline issued full refunds and travel vouchers to the affected passengers.
Then, in July 2024, another Delhi–San Francisco flight diverted to Krasnoyarsk, Russia (KJA), due to a technical snag. In this instance, Air India managed a faster response, dispatching a replacement aircraft from India to continue the journey. These incidents highlight the challenges of operating ultra-long-haul routes and the critical need for robust contingency plans in aviation safety. The Airbus A320neo (VT-EXO) operating as flight AIC 2487 experienced a cargo hold alert mid-flight, prompting a full emergency declaration. Airport authorities confirmed that the flight crew reported a warning signal from the cargo compartment shortly after takeoff. Fortunately, the issue resolved itself mid-flight, but the aircraft continued to Bhopal as a precaution.
All 172 passengers and crew disembarked safely. Air India stated that the aircraft is undergoing standard technical checks before being returned to service.
